Markov On Style

2018
single-channel video projection

Markov On Style is a video work that combines algorithmically generated text and sourced digital content to examine the intersections of automation, media production, and consumption. Using stock production footage to establish the visual style, the text in the video is created through an algorithmic process known as a Markov Chain. This algorithm analyzes patterns within a source text—in this case, Susan Sontag’s essay On Style—and then generates new text by predicting likely word sequences based on linguistic probabilities.

By remixing and transforming existing content into newly generated material, Markov On Style explores the implications of automation in media creation, raising questions about the role of algorithms in shaping cultural and intellectual discourse. As predictive models and intelligent systems become increasingly embedded in the platforms we use daily, Markov On Style prompts viewers to consider the implications of algorithm-driven content, inviting a critical reflection on how automated predictions influence the information we encounter and the way we interpret it.
