algorithmic set of rules, word results, image results
2017
Spiral bound book, edition of 10
Call/Response is a 34-page photo-book that explores the dynamic interplay between human intention and machine-driven processes through a set of algorithmic, game-like rules. This work unfolds as a recursive, rule-based exchange where a human (travis) and a machine (an online word generator and Google’s image search) respond to each other in a sequence of prompts. Beginning with a randomly generated word, travis uses Google image search to source visuals associated with that word. These images, in turn, prompt new word associations, creating an endless loop of human-machine interaction in which each step informs the next.
The resulting intermingling of text and images reflects a feedback loop within a structured yet open-ended process, where meaning is generated through the juxtaposition of algorithmically suggested imagery and human interpretation. Call/Response is both an exploration of and a collaboration with digital systems, challenging traditional notions of authorship and control. This project has no definitive outcome, no winners or losers; its purpose lies in the iterative process itself, emphasizing the unpredictability and fluidity of meaning within digitally mediated spaces. By navigating this boundary between human and machine, Call/Response invites viewers to reflect on the interpretive limitations and creative possibilities inherent in algorithmically driven media.
